Happy New Year. I have to be honest that’s the first time I listened to a post instead of reading the snippets. You have a very comforting voice.

Here’s my two cents.

The caucus in Iowa is either a blip, or it’s the beginning of a hell of a wind of political change. On both sides, left and right, the winner signified a potential shift from entrenched establishment. If this is the case it can be looked at many ways and here are couple that are on my mind since last week.

If the Iowa result represents a conscious groundswell for change than it could be a very passive, yet powerful way of the country telling its leadership that it’s still in charge. Only time and sustained efforts/results can bear this out.

The other thing I can’t stop spinning my wheels about is how well Obama performed and how hard Hillary flopped. If you asked me a week ago to choose whether our country was more prepared to elect a woman, especially a white, Christian (technically, I guess) woman, or a mixed race male with a Muslim name, I would have said the former. Who knows, it may still play out this way. Even more surprising was how strongly women voted for Barack. This is not to say I’m surprised he had women voting for him; but, in the democratic party anyway, I though Hillary was a lock for the woman’s vote.

What does all this mean? Who the hell knows? Even after the election we’ll need to be decades removed to truly understand the historical impact; but I’ll tell you what it means to me. At the end of the day, I love democracy. It can be frustrating, annoying, baffling, hateful, divisive and there’s been no shortage of occasion when I didn’t curse it myself. However, it can also be rewarding, inspiring, satisfying and unifying and in my 35 years I’ve felt all the above for better or worse.

I’ve rambled enough. I’m glad I listened. I used to love reading your blogs on SG; but I left the site a while ago.

Best of luck choosing a city. I’ll keep checking in and listening.

Personally, John Edwards is the closest to my own political beliefs, but in real politik, I’ve been watching the Obama-Clinton battles with a close eye. In that battle, I’m Clinton. So this turn of events is both surprising and a bit disappointing.
